Where are They this riders

** Adam “Wingnut” Smith**

**Who he is**

Australian bodyboarder from Cronulla (Sydney), associated with the “Cronulla Skid Kids” crew and known for riding/catching Shark Island since a young age.

**Why he became known**

He was one of the first riders sponsored by Manta (late 1980s). As a teenager, he was already regarded as a “super grom” (very promising), competing, traveling, and gaining fame for charging big waves. He had a signature board: the Wingnut Grommet board, noted as one of the first “signature” boards designed for kids.

**Hall of Fame / Recognition**

The Bodyboard Museum states that he was inducted into the “Riptide Bodyboarding Hall of Fame.” He was also inducted (2014) into the Australian Bodyboarding Hall of Fame (reference published in a relevant blog).

**Media / Documentary**

He is featured in the doc “Holding On” (about the Skid Kids scene), with an official page listing Wingnut in the cast. A review of the doc mentions that his journey includes a peak on tour and then a challenging period out of the scene (the review attributes this to mental health issues). An article (2025) about the Shark Island Challenge 2001 mentions “Adam ‘Wingnut’ Smith” in the context of the crew/era.

**Wins (Overall)**

Around the age of 15, he was already “winning comps.”

** Shark Island Challenge (SIC):**

3º lugar (1998)

4º lugar (1999)

7º lugar (2000)
